What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that occurs typically in the fall and winter months when daylight hours are typically shorter. The changes in light exposure can affect the body’s internal clock and throw off the body’s ability to regulate chemicals and hormones such as serotonin and melatonin. Symptoms include low energy, mood changes, sleep disturbances, and a general lack of interest in things you typically enjoy.
How Can Massage Therapy Help?
Massage therapy helps to decrease the stress hormone cortisol while increasing “feel good” hormones such as dopamine and serotonin. SAD can cause physical symptoms like fatigue, lethargy, and muscle tension. Massage can help relax tense muscles and improve blood circulation, increasing energy levels. Massage promotes better sleep patterns by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is the autonomic nervous system responsible for the body’s rest and digestion functions. The nurturing touch of massage also offers emotional support, reducing feelings of isolation and improving mental health. A one hour massage once a week is recommended to help keep the winter blues away.
